Genetically Modified Foods And The Human Body - 1159 Words
Food is needed for the growth and maintenance of the human body. A nutritious diet is the foundation of good health. Eating healthy protects your cells from damage, which is why genetically modified foods shouldn t be an option. Genetically modified foods are foods produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. Not only are genetically modified foods unhealthy for your body, but they have negative effects on many other things. Bioethics allows technology to interfere with the natural nature of our foods and how they are grown. The avoidance of genetically modified food can help better society in many ways. Genetically modified foods are known to be unhealthy for the human body. When creating these genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs, three main components are required, the gene you want to transfer, the organism you want to put it into, and a vector to carry the gene into that organismââ¬â¢s cells. T he unnaturalness of this procedure can cause problems in the human body. GMOs were introduced to consumers in 1994 and since then health problems have increased. From 1996 to 2005, there was a 6% increase in health issues that occurred (Smith). I wanted to show my skills during the out-two count. Suddenly, I felt that there was just me, basketball and spectators in this world and my feeling was; I belonged to myself. I felt I would succeed soonâ⬠¦ ââ¬ËAH~ââ¬â¢ all at once, a girl was running towards me. Before I could understand what was happening, I lost the ball. I found that, time, all the yelling and my pulse almost stopped at once. I could only see my teammatesââ¬â¢ blue grimaces, which hurt me so much. Distraught, I suddenly notified my teammates who were present. So there they were, with me. I was not fighting alone. I had my comrades, I had my friends. Their grimaces made me feel hurt and guilty. I should not have been selfish. I should have known that, I belonged to the team. I should have passed the ball to Wang. She was in a wonderful position to score. It was our last chance to win. If we got the score, we could have beaten our opponents, it was my fault. Now, we did not have enough time to win. Losing this chance, we were destined to lose this game. Finally, we lost our game, one point! We were so desperate that we could hardly believe it. This game left me with so many things to think. I felt like I am a little plank. The so called success, which collided with the teamââ¬â¢s interests, could not last long. At most, it was just a beautiful personal short show. I do not just belong to myself, sometimes, I should not just consider myself. I have the responsibility to my team, to my school, to my home and even to my society. I cannot let my memories stick to the lost basketball game. It creates a good impact on the field of food supply-chain management. The environmental pollution and the change in climate are considered as the factors that are responsible for threatening the different strategies towards management of sustainable supply chain. The report focuses on the issues faced by global agri-food supply chain along with implementation of theoretical frameworks in support to it. Apart from that, the role of culture in maintaining the green and effective supply chain by companies are also described in the report along with the concept of green supply chain management practices by global agri-food companies. 1.Current Issues and Challenges of the Global Agri-Food Supply Chain It can be said that the main area of issues that the agri-food supply chain faces is in the area of the logistics. Supply chain management is related to distribution channel and logistics. These two aspects are considered as the lever of the sustainable supply chain management. The issues of the supply chain management is based on the subject of order management, warehousing, packaging, delivery, waste disposal and sales returns management, shipment, delivery, etc (Burch Lawrence, 2013). The issues of the supply chain of agri-food companies in a global basis are described in the following. The logistics activities faces issues due to extreme fragmentation of the transformation industries and farms. The modern system of distribution pattern is more focused on direct control. The companies try to control all the supply-chain management activities of the whole food supply chain (Rueda, Garrett Lambin, 2017). In order to satisfy or mitigate the necessities and requirements of the agri-food industry, the market does not provide any logistic solutions towards it. The issues occurred in terms of door to door delivery and chill supply chain. The rigidity of the administrative fulfilments is responsible for lower efficiency in fresh food (Martnez-Jurado Moyano-Fuentes, 2014). Costs of logistics are increasing day by day while the prices of the fresh products are not increasing creating losses for the suppliers. As the farmers are not achieving many profits while selling their goods to the supermarkets and other big retailers, hence they are not able to use modern technologies and transport system for fast delivery of goods (Giles, 2012). Due to lack of technologies used in the farming processes, the freshness and the quality of the foods are degraded. The supermarkets and other big retailers in many countries of the world face in distribution problem and meeting the satisfaction of the customers. Quality management and maintenance of inventory is a global issue that most of the companies in agri-food sector faces in terms of making deals with the multinational companies (Dinu, 2016). Theories Related to Supply Chain Management There are many theories related to the supply chain management. Among them, three theories will be selected that will address the above mentioned issues. Six sigma in logistics is defined as the way of implementing the approach which will yield in the development of choices which is based on the balance of risk and values (Mangan, Lalwani, Lalwani, 2016). It is an internationally accepted process of management that is focused on manufacturing higher quality services or products while meeting demands and needs of the customers. The DMAIC methodology is the core of the six-sigma theory. It includes define, measure, analyse, improve and control. The processes of supply chain management are based on these aspects of the model (Dabbene, Gay Tortia, 2014). Lean manufacturing is an approach that is used by dealers and manufacturers of agri-food companies that focuses on elimination of waste in the manufacturing system. This process of manufacturing will help in the elimination of the waste from the process of manufacturing of the products (Mangan et al., 2016). The lean manufacturing system focuses on three aspects of quality, costs and delivery times. Lean manufacturing on the elimination of wastes is related to the sustainable supply chain activities. Environmental protection is also done using this practice of manufacturing (Keramydas et al., 2016). Multinational organizations use Just in Time theory that is focused on the reduction of the flow times in the whole production system along with response times from the various ranges of suppliers to the customers. Just in time is a popular theory in the supply chain management that helps in maintaining the inventory kevel as well as reducing the level of waste. It is popularly known as Toyota Production system (Aung Chang, 2014). It also maintains the different types of issues related to demand and supply of products between the manufacturers of products and the customers that ultimately helps in the maintenance of reputation (Zhang et al., 2016). Examples of Companies Facing Issues in Supply Chain Big retailers like Tesco, Wesfarmers, etc are facing issues in their supply chain management that affects the profitability of the company. Apart from that, it is seen that the codes of conduct of suppliers of the Tesco are not up to the mark. Hence, the suppliers are not providing quality materials to Tesco. The quality of the products of the Tesco is getting compromised. Besides this, the customers are complaining about the quality of the products (Handayati et al.,2015). The distributors of the agricultural products are facing issues in the increased cost of transportation. These big supermarkets usually take control over the small dealers and distributors of the agricultural products. The control of the multinational giants is due to the excessive control of the supply-chain management aspects (Mylan et al., 2015). It is seen that the prices of products of Aldi are lower than that of Tesco and Wesfarmers. It is due to the lack of inventory management and distribution of the products due to issues with the suppliers. In many countries, the transportation facilities and other technological aspects are not feasible (Bourlakis et al., 2014). It leads to lower profitability and larger cost in the manufacture of products of the agri-food companies along with maintenance of the supply chain and logistics aspects of the company. 2.Role of Culture in Promoting Efficient Competitive Supply Chain Culture has a deep impact on formulation of strategies that helps companies in building efficient, competitive and green supply-chain management strategies. For developing, efficient and competitive supply chain strategies, mutual trust, partnership, sharing information and cooperation among the different business partners are essential (Younis et al., 2016). The element of corporate culture is slightly different from that of nations culture. Agri-food companies must accomplish their corporate culture with the nations culture of their country of operation. The definition of culture consists of the collective programming of the human minds that is responsible for making differentiation from people of one culture to another culture (Schaltegger Burritt, 2014). Companies must practice cross-cultural communication in building strategies for the suppliers and the suppliers code of conduct. The six principles are described in the following that will help the agri-food companies in buildin g effective and competitive supply chain that improves relations with the suppliers (Notarnicola et al., 2017). Getting to know more about the suppliers ensuring the competition between the suppliers as an opportunity of building relationships or strengthening partnerships Supervising the suppliers Developing the technical skills of suppliers (Dries et al., 2014) Passing information to suppliers for development Working together with the suppliers in improving the supply chain processes (Cagliano, Worley Caniato, 2016) Apart from that, there are cost orientation and competitor orientation that are considered as part of organizational culture that are used by these global agri-food companies that will focus both on the nations culture and organizational culture (Shukla Jharkharia, 2013). Hence, culture helps in improving employee relations as well as improved and competitive supply chain processes that will result into profitability. It is seen that American culture and Asian culture are different from one another. Suppliers code of conduct are formulated in a way so that they can work as per the expectations (Yu et al., 2014). Concept of Global Green Supply Chain The concept of green supply chain and logistics is defined as the supply chain which is related to the improved performance of the company while measuring the attributes of cost reduction, sustainability, emission reduction by using the metrics of carbon footprint and other various technological aspects (Aitken et al., 2016). The green supply chain is used by many companies nowadays in order to maintain sustainability in the perspective of supply chain also. However, it can be said that sustainability in the aspect of logistics and supply chain is critical. Nevertheless, many companies are practicing carbon footprint and other metrics (Bhattacharya et al., 2014). There are many drivers of green logistics such as increase of energy costs, global alarm exceeds over the greenhouse gas emission, climate change, environmental protection and government agency regulations, improved awareness in the community (Matopoulos et al., 2015). By giving it a different cover, we can pass over it more readily and not see how it is camouflaged. Fear retains a darkness that we dont want to deal with, a place that we dont want to go, a dwelling that is undeniably uncomfortable. In the light we can speak our truth, in the darkness we can hide not wanting to venture out. The light has all healing powers, but why do we fear it so? Is it that we dont want to face ourselves, face our faults, and look ourselves in the eye? There is no issue in hiding fault, but the issues lie in opening up and facing the truth. So, we may be afraid of the ensuing circumstances, the possibility of rejection of removal or being shunned by family, friends, and society in general. But what comes of that, other than for us to slip back into the shadowy darkness. To suffer, to wallow in self pity, to yearn for a better life. Fear can grip us to the point of unmoveability, to the point of depression, to a feeling of cold and loneliness. We do not have to choose the route of others to be a part of the national alliance. We walk in shadows of other and that is ok as long as it is in the shadows of those who have gone before us and made an impact. But we do not need to walk in the shadow of those who are among us. We need to be strong, become front runners of an age of deliverance, an age that will bind those of us who are of the light. The more light that is spread, the smaller the darkness becomes until it is over powered overtaken. Light heals, darkness deceives. We have the ability to move forward, united, unified in the same thought and power to heal, to create the universe for all mankind to live in, peacefully and without fear of penetration by the dark forces. Our leadership will be from one of the light. But the masses will respond to a momentum created by the forces of light that will move us forward into a new millennium. We are the future of this earth, the keepers of the new way. We will be the teachers for those who do not believe, who have misgivings, who possess fear. Ones ability to see through the darkness, towards the light at the end of the tunnel, will encompass redemption in all of our souls. The masses will move forward, one by one, and then by groups until the flow will excel into a voluminous overthrow of the bitterness and evil of the existing mankind. We will manifest a lifetime of hope and inspiration, pushing back and pushing down, trampling on the darkness of possession, of grief, of solitude of depressiveness. We will embark on a journey to enlighten our souls, to truly understand what it is like to feel the power of love and acceptance. For those who have never felt this before, it will be all consuming, washing over you like a spiritual wind, caressing and subsiding your fears. Be willing to go to the levels it will take to bring forth and expedite this happening. Believe in the goal, believe in yourself. Believe in unity and perseverance. The sins will be washed clear when faith is put into the light. Past transgressions will be forgiven , debts will be paid, understanding will flow inward and truth will be spoken. Love will saturate the world, all will be as one and one will be all. There will no longer be an ongoing for we will live in the preset, in the presence of all that is good, all that is one, all that is beautiful in the light. Know that it may appear difficult at first, because you are unsure, because you are leery. Time and the past darkness have darkened your soul and your thoughts and beliefs. Change will not happen overnight, but just know that it will happen. Just be open to the possibility that life can and will be wonderful. We will remember our purpose, or intention and what we were set on this earth to achieve. The window will be opened and the brilliance will flow into our hearts. We will see the new world as it should be, not as it is. Once we accept our journey and our purpose, we will move forward with remarkable speed to achieve our oneness with the light. We will defy all odds, all obstacles in our path to rise above and blend with those of the same passion. What we create now will be passed on to generations to come. Our children will see the changes and become a part of the new family. Our grandchildren will be born of the light and with these gifts already instilled within them. They will be the children of the new age. The earth will respond, growing and developing more jubilantly and not whiter away. It will balance itself out and discontinue the purging to cleanse itself. We may not understand initially, but our journey is only beginning and it is going to be a wonderful journey. Expel the stress, the negative thoughts, the irrational behaviors, those things that you cannot control. Send love and blessings to those who are the creators of your stress. Look around your surrounds and wish away any negative distractions or events that are occurring. Replace them with good thoughts and feelings of compassion and love. Dispel the resentments and quick response to point out the negativism. Quiet the multitudes by simply sharing the love and the happy thoughts. Believe and know that you are capable of making change happen by your own individual actions and through the words that you speak. Others will become aware and inspired by what they see and hear. This will not happened overnight but through a passage of time and endurance and faith. Like a chain reaction, it will move forward, spiraling outward through each and every person you encounter. The automatic fire sprinkler system was one of the earliest sprinkler systems placed into effect. The origin of the modern day automatic sprinkler system dates back to the early 1800ââ¬â¢s. The first automatic sprinkler system was created in England in the 1806 by John Carey. It consisted of a pipe with valves held closed by counterweights attached by string. When flames burned through the string the counterweight dropped to the floor, which opened the valve that released the water and extinguished the fire. As the 1800ââ¬â¢s progressed, the basic pipe system for sprinklers was becoming more prevalent across England. It began to pop up in textile mills all through out the country. In 1864, as sprinkler system use grew, Major Stewart Harrison of the 1st Engineer (London) Volunteers invented the first automatic sprinkler head. A few years later two gentlemen by the names of Henry Parmelee of Newhaven, Connecticut, and Frederick Grinnell of Providence, Rhode Island, added to the s prinkler head to give it a more practical application. Parmelee took the automatic sprinkler head and added to it a fusible link that broke at about 160oF. This allowed the system to control which heads broke so the whole system wouldnââ¬â¢t drown the whole structure in water, it would only release where there was sufficient heat to break a head. Grinnell invented a head that could withstand higher water pressures without break as well as distribute water more evenly. Each of these inventions increased the efficiency of the systems greatly. Now in todayââ¬â¢s modern fire protection era, automatic sprinkler systems are used to protect everyday buildings around the world. It is most commonly in commercial use buildings. The automatic sprinkler system is the oldest and most widely utilized system in effect today. Through simple application of water onto a fire before it can grow it has saved countless lives and saved countless amounts of money in property and business. There are few areas that require automatic sprinkler systems in residential homes, but as they are proven to be safe, affordable, and effective, this will rapidly change. Are Teenage year the best of your life? The teenage years are considered the best years of your life that is what magazine. Iââ¬â¢m going to tell you why they are not. First you are always looked at to succeed by your parents, the lack of freedom we get and last but not least we are considered lairs and criminal among todayââ¬â¢s society. One of the disadvantages of being a teenager is that we are always looked to succeed in school so you can do and be better then them. They also say if we fool around the future for us is going the extinguished. Other disadvantage of being a teen is the lack of freedom we get. Sure we might live in a free country but are we all free? The freedom that Iââ¬â¢m talking about is staying up late, working and school. Staying up late I donââ¬â¢t know about you but I have to get home before my parents I canââ¬â¢t even be in front of my house to the wee hours of the morning. Working is another one we another one we canââ¬â¢t work on weekdays because my Dad says it will effect my school work how will he know if he doesnââ¬â¢t give it a chance. School is the worst of all we canââ¬â¢t even wear earrings because itââ¬â¢s not part of the uniform I understand that but the shaving is just stupid how could you order someone to do something that comes in naturally. It is like telling someone you have to get a hair cut every week. Itââ¬â¢s violating our freedom of expressing. For example if a bunch of teens walk into a variety store the owners automatically think we are going to rob them but the only thing we want is a little snack. For example a teacher and a student get into an argument and itââ¬â¢s the teacherââ¬â¢s fault the principle is going to believe the teacher because they donââ¬â¢t tell lies. The author lets us know right at the beginning that there is some kind of conflict between the mother and Dee that has kept them apart. When the mother starts to tell us about a dream she has where she and Dee meet again on a TV talk show, she makes a reference to the way she really looks, "large big-boned woman with rough, man working hands" (492). Then she says that is not the woman she is on the show. She is the way her daughter wants her to be, "a hundred pounds lighter, my skin like an uncooked barley pancake" (492). If Dee really loved her mother, she would not care what she looked like. Early on when both Dee and Maggie are still children, their house burned down. Maggie was severely burned in this fire. As the mother carries Maggie out of the burning house, she sees Dee watching the fire "with a look of concentration" (492) on her face. The mother felt that Dee hated this house and also hated Maggie. Dee always wanted more. She was ashamed of her family and the way they lived. Maggie and the mother were never ashamed. This is their life and they seem happy with it and with each other. Maggie has always been in "envy and awe" of her sister. She thinks her sister always has and always will get what she wants.
